Somali Shax Rules
Traditional Somali Shax Rules & Strategies:
- PLACEMENT: 12 pieces each, no removals during placement
- JARE: Three in a row (mill)
- LABA-QAAD: Double mill threat - most powerful strategy
- IRMAAN: Straight or cross formations
- AFAREY: Four-piece formations
- OODAN: Trap opponent, they must ask "Jid i sil aan jar aheyn"
- WIN: Reduce opponent to 2 pieces
Traditional wisdom: "Control the center, avoid Suran (hanging pieces), and always plan for Laba-qaad."
Somali Alquerque Rules
Somali Alquerque (5×5 Board)
- SETUP: 12 pieces per player, center empty
- MOVEMENT: Orthogonal only (4 directions)
- CAPTURES: Jump over opponent (optional, not mandatory)
- FRIENDLY JUMP: Jump over own pieces for safety
- SULTAN PROMOTION: Reach opposite end (2× size)
- SULTAN RULES: Cannot be captured by regular pieces; Can only be captured by other sultans
- WIN: Eliminate all opponent pieces OR trap them
Somali 9 Holes Rules
Somali 9 Holes uses a 3x3 grid without diagonals.
- Drop phase: Players alternate placing three pieces on empty holes
- Immediate Win: Making a straight line during placement wins immediately
- Slide phase: After all pieces placed, move one piece per turn along orthogonal connections only
- No jumps or flying
- Win Condition: First line of three OR blocked opponent wins
